The past few weeks have been hard on my dad pain wise. He is in A LOT of pain on the weak side of his body. Physical Therapy is at a standstill with him because he won’t improve at this level of pain. He is starting to vocalize more in physical therapy by yelling out in pain, cursing, expressing his frustration etc.
Trying to stretch out his right leg is impossible (he has an enormous amount of tone). It is always in a bent position when it is not in his custom brace to keep it straighter.
The good news is, yesterday he got went through a Baclofen pump trial at the hospital. They injected baclofen (a muscle relaxer) through his spine to help the tone / pain in his legs. It worked!! When the physical therapist was moving his leg after it was sooooo much easier. He wasn’t in pain at all. Prior to this, even if you would just touch his leg, he would give you a nasty look because it was so painful.
The next step is the surgery. They are keeping him at the hospital and he will get the baclofen pump surgery on Thursday. The pump is usually placed in the abdominal wall underneath the skin. Medications will go directly into the space between the spinal cord and the protective sheath surrounding the spinal cord.
Once this is done, it should take a few days or weeks to notice a difference. The hope is physical therapy will be A LOT easier for him pain wise and he can start to move better on his own.
Please send positive thoughts this pump will work! <3
